Fasting for Peace – Day Three

By Jane Lee, Life Academy Teacher

During my fast, I found myself reflecting on my pledge, “I understand that I am an important part of a learning environment.” As I spent the first part of my fast with friends on a 4-hour car ride, I wasn’t too focused on the fast and my restriction on eating, although I did find myself wanting to snack! It wasn’t until after I was without my friends that I had strong urges to eat anything! Luckily, as a huge foodie, I knew that I would need extra help with the fast and had enlisted a close friend who I had shared my pledge with. During the toughest time (around dinner time!) having a long, thoughtful conversation with my friend really helped me not only get through the rough part of my fast, but reminded me of my role as an educator.

Although I certainly wanted to break my fast several times, I kept thinking about my community at Life Academy: the students, the teachers and staff, and the leaders in AIA who work so hard to build our safe and strong community. It’s an honor to work with a group of people who are so passionate about empowering our youth. Thanks so much for this unique opportunity!
